PlainsTender Update
“The Victorian Volcanic Plains Project would like to welcome it’s newest staff member Leanne Rolfe. Leanne has previously been working at the Corangamite CMA as the Wetlands Officer so she will bring lots of wetland knowledge to the project.

Landholders with wetlands on their VVP sites will see Leanne this year during our monitoring visits and she will be able to assist with species identification and management questions. Leanne will be a key asset to the project in it’s final twelve months.”

Plains Facts: Edition 8 (2007)

PlainsTender Update
“Welcome to the 8th Edition of PlainsFacts. I am pleased to report that monitoring visits have been completed and it’s great to see the excellent work everyone is doing especially in these dry times. It may be difficult to see the results of the hard work you are putting in at present, but be assured when rain returns you’ll be a step ahead.

All contracted Landholders should have received a PlainsTender sign and VVP Vest, please let me know if you haven’t received these items.”

PlainsTender Update
“Since the last newsletter there have been many changes, the most obvious one being the departure of VVP PlainsTender project leader Anne Buchan.

After 2 years running the project Anne has moved into a Policy role with
DSE Head Office in Melbourne. Anne did a fantastic job running the project and we wish her all the best in her new position. I will now be taking over the running of the project so please feel free to call me with any questions and no doubt I have already met you during a monitoring visit or will be likely to contact you shortly to arrange a visit.”

Plains Facts: Edition 6 (2006)

Plains Tender Update
“As grassland lovers it’s the time of year we most look forward to. The native grasses become green and start to seed, the native herbs flower with vibrant colours of pinks, yellows and purples. For those with native grasslands this is the best time of year to rest your pasture to allow he native plants to set seed and ensure there is plenty of green feed during the dryer months of summer and into autumn.

Look out for the Common Early Nancy (Wurmbea dioica), Common Everlasting (Chrysocephalum apiculatum), Chocolate Lilies Arthropodium strictum) and Milkmaids (Burchardia umbellata) that tend to flower early in the spring.”

Plains Tender Update
“Congratulations to all the landholders who were successful in the second round of PlainsTender. We look forward to working with you all over the next four years and improving the quality of your native vegetation.

With both rounds of the Tender completed we will now look to focus on the promotion of the Victorian Volcanic Plains and the ecosystems that live upon it. We want to involve the local communities and as PlainsTender landholders we hope to involve you all in learning about the native vegetation on the Plains, ways to identify native grasses and herbs and what we can do to ensure their survival.

The PlainsTender project team will be present at both the Eel Festival and Women on Farms with a display full of information on Grasslands and the Volcanic Plains. Please drop in and see us if you are looking for information on specific topics related to native vegetation or you may have some of your own personal experience you may like to share with us.”

Expressions of Interest for the PlainsTender have now closed and we would like thank everyone for their participation in the project. There was a great range of sites assessed and the landholders were wonderful with their co-operation and enthusiasm for the project. Site assessments have also concluded and those involved in Round Two should have received their management plans and prepared their tenders. Evaluation of the tenders should take place mid-January.

Plains Facts: Edition 2 (2005)

What would you bid to provide these services on your land?
There are 75,000 hectares of native vegetation on private land on the Victorian Volcanic Plains (VVP). Much of it is important for land protection, water quality, salinity control and its environmental significance. The management of native vegetation depends on the already substantial efforts of private landholders who are supported by a range of incentive and extension schemes. However additional tools are now available to support these current approaches in order to Increase the level of landholder participation in active native vegetation management and target priority native vegetation in a cost-effective manner.
